salt drying deer capes

when salt drying deer capes or any other hides for that matter, what is the correct temp. for drying? i did 2 deer capes & they dried so hard that when i moved the jaw skin it cracked. should it be pliable? any help would be greatly appreciated tanks, rj peets.

rj. you salt once, shake off, then salt again, then you hang to dry. Not sure why you want it to be pliable, that will happen when you put it in the bath. That is the way I do mine but I send mine to the tannery. Everything is done at room temp. Hope this helps

A salted cape that has dried can crack, for lack of a better word, if you try and bend certain areas. This is a normal condition of a salt dried skin. A greasier hide like a bear or boar may be a little more plyable, but hard just the same. Room temp. for me is fine, just keep humidity down if you have a damp work area.
