Hello, Just wanted some opinions on hide breaking. I have tried the pulling across a 2x4 and sawhorse. Seems there would be an easier way. I read somewhere in this web site to use a dull axe head held in a vise. Maybe yall can give me some advise. Thanks, Mike

check the orange button to your left I know that it is in there. Just got done looking in there myself and fund lots of good stuff. Just type in breaking hides
Place the hide in liquid nitrogen. A minute later, withdraw it and slam it on the floor. It will break in dozens of pieces. Even works with bananas - and in amazing to see.
I did look in the archives already, just wanted to know what kind of ways are the most used and which turn out the best results. Sorry I asked!
I typed in "breaking hide" and there was 157 different postings with discussion on them. If you read them all and found 5 different ways to do the breaking, then ask which of the techniques (and list the best ones) work best in regards to the current expertice reading the forum today.
The questions that are basic are often ignored because the general audience understand that the basics are already in the archives. If you post a well researched question, the likelihood to getting multiple answers is increased. Just my opinion though.
That's why I send all mine out to a tannery. For what they charge, it's well worth it.
What I have used is a garden spade. Wire wheel it to remove the rust and dirt put in a vise and break the hide as it dries. Plus what a work out! good luck
They work cheap and let them break the hide.
