Then see it the hair pulls out. I have also heard of people boiling a piece of tanned leather, but what does that prove? Any leather can be boiled.
john,
It's not if it boils or not its what temperature the hide curls at.
Thats great for making leather for shoe soles, but not worth a darn for taxidermy.
If the tan works its way through the hide, and the hair does not slip thats all we taxidermist need.
That deer head will never boil, its glued to a form. so again what purpose would the boil test do for taxidermist? None I can see.
Cart, as john said many people don't care about the tan; maybe just concern yourself weather it's tanned all the way though, would be a better way for you to go.
Cut a piece off the bottom of the cape and look if the color is the same all the way though.
Was to push your fingernail down into it and if the dent stays put, it's tanned. Wilson has the correct answer, however. Cut the hide and make sure it's penetrated all the way through.
Thanks for not pointing out my spelling errors. haha

To check the quality of your tan, you would do the shrink test.
To check the thorough-ness of your tan, you would either shave off a bit of skin and see that it is white all the way through, or whatever other method they are telling you to do.
Just semantics.
