Safetee acid tanning

Submitted by Jim on 01/20/2004. ( taxidermy@verizon.net ) 69.40.142.64

I have always used Formic acid pickle in the past. I currently have a bear skin soaking in Safteeacid pickle. My questions follow.

When I remove the hide from the pickle do neutralize it before I put it into the degreaser or not?

After degreasing do i need to put it back in the pickle or is it good to be tanned then.

Will it be a problem to use Liqua Tan with saftee acid pickle? I still have a full gallon of it and would like to use it.

Thanks
Jim

Any other tips on Safetee acid appreciated

Here is the order.
Pickle, shave, repickle, check shaving?, degrease, pickle if needed. Neutralize, tan.

It is pretty well shaved, I put it on the machine when I was getting all the fat off so i am shaved down pretty good.

# days minimum on the first pickle right?
What about the liqua Tan will it be OK

Also how dry should the skin be before I apply the tan? I usually try to get it pretty dry just not sure if this will be the same or not. From what I was reading with the papers that came with it, it just says to let it drip for an hour.

Three days, stirring daily,, flesh again if needed,, repickle if needed,,

Neutralize to 4.5 , allow to drip dry, apply your Liqa-tann.

Thousands of furs are proccesed each year and they dont get washed.

If the animal is dirty or bloody wash it before salting!

This is not rocket science, Rittels sells several books of tanning, get one of them.
