Help out a beginner with a gray fox

Submitted by SeaBass on 01/25/2004. ( bassluongo@comcast.net ) 24.91.108.111

I just aquired a gray fox (roadkill)that i would like to mount (I can do squirrels, nothing bigger yet, however). From looking in the archives I have concluded that nobody can agree on the best way to preserve the hide for mounting. Is there a way which you guys think is the least likely way to cause problems? I know this is a rather ambiguous question, I hope someone has a clue what I'm talking about. Also, if I tan, do i still have to split the ears? Thanks

You have to split those ears, regardless

I use DP on animals up to this size because of one tiny little problem with tanning. Foxes and bobcats are notorious for losing hair on the back side of their ears during tanning if everything isn't just perfect. Use whatever method YOU'RE comfortable with and make sure you use a GOOD hide paste.

keep the fox cold when u skin it will help prevent hair loss also but i use rineharts tanning cream and havent had much of a problem with hair loss.. JUST KEEP IT COLD WHILE YOU SKIN IT!

When you turn the foxes ears add a little laquer thiner to the ear it will displase the heat from your hands and kill the bacteria. MichelleW

Add the laquer on the hair side of the ear!

The directions make it look pretty idiot-proof...anyone know if it is good in terms of fox ear-hair slippage?

Seabass...
Krowtann is the way to go on Tanning a Fox. I've tanned some Red Fox"s and so far, everything turned out nice.
