i run a varmint hunting crew and have killed many but have tanned few. i have tanned hides by only scraping and cleaning the hide, streching it, and then coating it with Borax soap to dry the skin after about 7 to 10 days. the down side is that the skin becomes very hard and softening is very difficult unless it is a small animal like a fox or racoon. i want to know if there is any other way to sucsesfully tan a hide with household items?

Borax does not tan the skin...
John, Borax is the only thing your going to find at home, besides a vegetable tan, you might be able to find something at your library about it. You should still oil them, and soften them by running the skin side across a hoe our shovel blade clamped in your vice.If you want a longer lasting tan you should get a tanning kit from any taxidermy supply like WASCO, Van Dykes, Research mannequin call the 1-800- directry for their numbers. Good luck.
