what is the use of borax ? and what is the difference with salt?

I'm sorry, too long skinning woodcocks, borax is similar to a dry presevative. It aids in the drying process. Salt will temporarily keep things from going bad by virtue of "pulling" the fluids out and drying the hide hard, thus preserving it in a sense, until it can be rehydrated, and tanned. Hopefully Bruce, John C or George will make amends to this poor excuse of a reply, but I think I touched on the basic essence of it
