washing after pickle

After I pickle my whitetail cape for 3 days I was wondering if I could just neutralize the skin and then just put it in a bucket with some dawn detergent, then rinse the detergent out. Would there be any chance of slipping? Thank You..Todd

After the hide has been in the pickle for 3 days you need to shave it. After the hide has been shaved wash it in dawn detergent. Just a quick wash to remove the skin shavings and any blood and dirt left in the hair. Rinse the hide real good and then put it back in the pickle for another 24 hours. Pull the hide out neutralize and then tan.

The reason you put the hide back in the pickle after shaving is to insure that the hide is copletly pickled all the way through. Hope this helps. MichelleW

You should never put a pickled skin in plain water. Pickle for 3 days, shave, pickle for at least 12 more hours, neutralize, rinse, tan and then wash. Never was between pickles.
