i'm salting a small rabbit skin now but when the time comes to tan it how long should i let it tan in a wood alcohol-turpentine tanning solution?

I don't understand why everyone is salting there skins. my best results with rabbits is to flesh them, brain them, soften them.
thats not what i wanna know though
