i found a tanning method and the guy who wrote it seemed to really know what he was talking about. he said he's been tanning for 15 years and that this one was the best: after skinning the animal, don't deflesh or dry out but to just put right in the freezer in a ziplock bag. Then after you have four skins or more, thaw each one out under warm water 1 at a time. After that mix 1 gallon of hot water, 1 gallon of cool water, and 8 oz of battery acid to get and stir. Then put each skin into the bucket 1 at a time. after all the skins are in the solution, put a non-metallic weight on the skin to keep them at the bottom. after 1 week, take skins out one by one and wash in dishwashing detergent then wash out detergent and solution and peel flesh off. then put them back in for another week. after that week take them out and wash again and hang to dry then stretch by hand. how does this tanning method sound?
thanks

sounds like the most screwed up instructions one can tell a beginner, just go any buy yourself the Rittels ez-100(and im not a salesman, just a happy customer)and tan your stuff with that, easy, safe, and you will be much more happy with them results.ps-MAKE SURE YOU FLESH ALL FAT OF ANYTHING YOU TAN,one other thing dont thaw fur under warm water ,let it thaw kind of at room tempature
Just listen to the last poster advice. Get a tanning kit from a supply company. I also use Rittels eze 100. Get the saftety acid and follow the directions and you will be successful. First of all I would not recommend the hot water on the raw skin. Heat promotes and speeds up the growth of bacteria. I recommend fleshing thoroughly and then salting twice and then rehydrate. Then it is on to the acid pickle bath until pickled. Then shave the hide and neutralize and then tan. Read the tanning archives and you will learn alot better way than you previously mentioned.

I found that same article a while back, and tried it before trying any of the more modern, SAFER methods. It did work, I have a tanned skin, but as the guy who wrote it said, the flesh does NOT peel right off. I did as he said, and kept soaking and soaking, and it still never got to that point. After trying it that way, and doing many more the "better" way, I am MUCH more comfortable using SAFTEE acid, and not having to use/store such a dangerous corrosive as battery acid.
That said, I still have battery acid stored, cause I dont know what the heck to do with the nasty stuff...Im afraid I will cause an explosion trying to neutralize 1/2 gallon of the stuff.....anyone?
