I can understand why people want to their things to a tannery close by, but I think when looking for a tannery quality of the tan should be more important than saving a buck or two on shipping. I just recently mounted a hippo (this past weekend) that was tanned by YOST Fur Dressing in Sturgeon Bay WI. and it went together without a problem, no big deal right? The kicker is the skin had been tanned over 20 years ago! I'm sure there are tanneries that can do the same but I know where all my skins go to be tanned. Yost's ph# is 920-743-7162. I don't think you would be disappointed and they have a fast turn around as well. John

When I worked In Tallahassee Fla for Larry Quinn OF American Sportsman Taxidermy, They had their own Full blown tannery. They tanned commercially for at least 12 yrs that I know of. And Rodney Is the name of the person running it. Southern Fur Dressing Tallahassee Fla Look them up you won't be disapointed. They are all good folks over there.

About that hippo

If it was tanned 20 years ago, it was probablly tanned with aluminum sulphate. Would anyone like to comment on this? If I am right, this hippo seems to disagree with some recent alum tanning posts.

IMHO sometimes newer methods are not better.

Aluminum sulphate always gets my vote. Never lost a hide to it. Longevity may be more related to the quality of the tanning oils used.
