I would like to know if any one can direct me how to tan a cow hide. I have two daughters who are in 4-H and are insisting on doing a hide for a leathercraft project for fair. I need help please. They are relentless on this project.

I am a taxidermist and I do for the most part my own tanning but my problem is I have yet to tan a cow much less remove the hair. What are those steps without buying a kit.

Chack out either Mark of Knobloch's or Bruce Rittel's web site. These are the main sites for tanning. They have a ton of info there and then you can make a chooce or even ask one of them on which is the best way to go.

Back off on the Cow hide!

A Cow hide will over-whelm your daughters! Try to convince them into tanning a small calf skin or Goat skin instead. Both are less bulky and tan well. For youths I would highly recommend the Goatskin!

Then - get them a Kit for the actual tanning. Rittels sell them as well as others Suppliers here. They contain everything thats needed except for Salt and Baking Soda - which you can buy locally.

If you would like a copy of our Kit instructions - please e-mail me by clicking on my e-mail above.
