BJ,wash the hide in cool water before the pickle, don't ever wash before the salting of the hide, hope this helps-John W.
blood will wash out in all steps of tanning. Most will wash off in the rehydration bath after salt drying. The rest will come out in the degreasing bath. I never worry about blood on anything till after its salted.
Paul, You should always be concerned about blood on skins that are to be tanned with the hair on. Ever wonder why the interior of the nostrils are weak or hair is weak around the nose. Have you ever seen what blood does after it oozes out of a wound and is left on the hair for a period of time. It is either weak or it slips. Blood is protein and bacteria grows like crazy on it. In our we have a practice of rinsing our turned and fleshed capes in cold water with about 10% salt solution and a small amount of dawn soap, before salting it doesn't take long. Have all but eliminated any problems with weak capes due to blood damage. Then salt and dry. It works.
