I've just skinned a hide off of one of our cows that died, and want to know what to do now. Would like to end up with a rug. Any suggestions.
Thanks

He will know what to do with it.
how do i find a good taxidermist in my area? is there anything that i need to do with the hide in the meantime? thank you for your response.
You should salt it down if its going to be any time before you get it to the taxidermy shop. Jack F
Salt it with non iodized table or fine mixing salt from a feed store. If you can, roll it up into a roll and put it on a slanted surface so that the liquid will run out of the hide. After 24 hrs unroll it, scrape off the old salt and resalt it and leave it lying out flat in an area where varmints and bugs can't find it. It should be fine. If you wait too long to send it out to have it tanned it will get really stiff and hard to handle. Good luck to you. Any taxidermist should be able to locate a tannery for you.
I recently skinned a cow, too. I was told to nail it to a piece of plywood and salt it. Did that! It has been salting for 4 days, The hide is dry and still salted. What do we do with it next? Do we have to take it to a taxidermist, or how do we make it into a rug, like Ryan wanted to do?
Give us a call or drop us an email if interested. Our chrome tanned cow hides come out soft and thin.
