Im tanning a buffalo hide for a rug I have always lutan-f, will this tanning agent work good for a rug? Or will it wash out if it needs washed? I have read that EZ -100 is washable, would I be better off to use it instead? any sugestion from you more experanced tanners out there would greatly help me out.

Switching

I am getting ready to switch to Rittels Tanning Agents just for the purpose of it not leaching at all. This is a good thing I think and I am pretty sure it goes further than the Lutan-F. I have been using Lutan and I was reluctant to switch at first until I found out that a bunch of Professional Tanneries and Fur Dressers use EZ Tan.

I hope it turns out.

I've never had the guts to tackle a job that size. I hope you are thinning the hide enough with a fleshing machine. Otherwise the chemicals probably won't penetrate deep enough, and you'll end up with a very stiff hide. Both Lutan-F and EZ-100 are supposed to be very water resistant and comparable. My experience with lutan-F is not extensive, but I've had beaver mittens become very stiff after a few exposures to a lot of moisture (that were tanned with lutan-F). There's lot's of people on here who are have more knowlege than I on this subject. I've never tried a chrome-tan, but my guess would be that it is much better than the other two in terms of a garment tan.

If you decide to use professional tanner, give us a call. We chrome tan bison hides, and make the leather soft and pliable.
