cleaning the leather side of a cape

I need help, or some idea's on how to clean the leather side of a buffalo rug. I did all the proccess of tanning it and double oiled it so it would stay soft. I didnt want to clean the sawdust out of the long main hair when I tummbled it so I removed the sawdust from the tumbler and substiuted 3 inch cobble rocks to help break the hide back to softness after drying. Now the flesh or leather side of the hide is all dirty looking , is there something that will help clean it up, or do I have to rewash it ?

might be worth a try

This may work for you, but beware, I'm not a pro at this stuff yet. I was trying to soften a hide by sanding it with a palm sander and I noticed it really cleaned up the hide. Try it in a small area first and see if it looks ok.

How did the rocks work? A palm sander works great. Be careful though.

I used rocks because I did a search in the great archives, and found a guy the used iron weights insead of saw dust to break hides, so I have plenty of cobble rock around.
