I HAD A CAPE TANNED IT WAS DONE W/ A AUTO-TANNER.I WASHED THE CAPE AND USED BACTERICIDE.IT HAD A STRONG TANNING SMELL WHEN I MOUNTED I WAS HOPING IT WOULD GO AWAY,WELL IT HASNT AND MY WIFE WONT LET ME BRING IT IN THE HOUSE,NOT THAT I BLAME HER ITS PRETTY STRONG.HOW CAN I GET RID OF THE SMELL AND WHAT IS CAUSING IT.THANKS FOR ANY HELP TRAVIS

What did you tan with, what was the animal?
Did you pickle it? Dont skip the pickle, you need to kill the cape first. Did you flesh it compleatly? If you leave some meat scraps on it, it will stink.
it was a whitetail.i had the cape done by some one else this is the first mount ive done.dont know much more than that it was done in a auto tanner and it was fleshed thin,it had the smell when i received it back. washed it and soaked in bactericide.still had the smell.its not a soar smell just a strong tanning/chemical smell.
think i would replace wife for a good dog.just hang smelly mount out of reach of dog.
of tans on the market today, that smell pretty strong. Emagine 20 or 30 such skins piled up on a table at a Taxidermy show. You can smell the skins from 20ft away! Cant describe the smell-kind of unpleasent, like formaldehide for example, although that is not what it is.
