Removing hair from a cow skin

I have to make some rawhide from a cow skin. Have never done it before and was wondering how to remove the hair from the hide and if I have to preserve it with anything before I dry it. Thanks for your time

Go to the orange button on the left hand column and type "hair off tanning" at the search space. There should be plenty for you to read. Heck you could even type in rawhide or whatever and there should be anything you need.

you just tan it normally, but to get the hair off you just add a step, which is at the simplest put, soaking it in lye or maybe it is lime beforehand, yeah i think it is lime, either way it is for sure in the archives, i have even heard of people mixing water and campfire ashes and it does the trick just fine to take off the hair. Not the best way but i guess if you are a mountain man or something you could do that.

In addition to tanning for taxidermists, we also have a division that makes top grade rawhide from steer, goat, kip, calf, and also bison. We sell our rawhide, but also make rawhide for customers out of their own skins. Contact us if you are interested.
