Unfortunately without using chemicals to penetrate and bond to the fibers of the skin, thus stabilizing it - you can only temporarily treat the skin for some limited use but ultimately it will begin to deteriorate. Household materials simply do not "tan".

Why not experiment with "Brain Tanning"? If you will be in the bush anyway, and unable to purchase any appropriate tanning chemicals - then it may be an alternative for you. It's long, hard work - but - it produces usable material.
