Wet Tan

Submitted by Kyle on 9/20/04 at 12:36 AM. ( )

I have a wet tanned mtn. goat hide from Canada that has been stuck in customs for a couple of weeks. I was wandering how long it will remain good out of the freezer rolled up in a box? Thanks

Should be fine

If it was tanned, the only reason for refrigeration/freezing is to prevent the drying out of the hide. If it's in a plastic bag, that should be no problem, and if not, you may have to rehydrate it.

If it dose not remain frozen, it may mold on you. If that happens the skin side will have mold on it and it may smell after you mount it. I would (if mold is present) wipe the skin side down with dawn dish soap before mounting. You should be able to clean the hair side the same way before bleaching.
