i neutralize in borax. How much bug proofing if any does that give me? I always assumed it gave me at least a little. Are there any other easy ways to incorporate bug proofing in the tanning.

.... its a Knoblox Product and can be used on tanned skins,Birds as well as in a fish pickle.
But NOTHING bug proofs forever anymore. At least nothing leagel. Even Protex give's you about a years protection. Works off of vapors and smells a bit like Lysol.

I cook up a nicotine brew which I mix in with my hidepaste (instead of using just regular water). Nicotine repels insects and prevents them from laying eggs in the mounts as well. How long it lasts I do not know (some reports say a few years) but I guess any protection is better then none.
I also use this brew to wash out the inside of horncores before I mount them up on the mannikin.
