Tanning Sheepskins

Ive done a little tanning before..

I guy that I work with wants me to tan 3 lambskins hes got, after the lambs go to slaughter.

Will the lanolin on the wool affect how the skin soaks up the tanning solution?

Ive tanned beavers before, and obviusly due to the 'waterproofing' on thier fur it makes it a bit harder for the tanning solution to penitrate.

THanks in advance!

Christian

Use a Wool Degreaser on the wool!

Use a wool degreasing agent on the wool to eliminate the lanolin - which also attracts and holds a lot of the dirt and grime on sheepskins. DONT use ordinary detergents. They degrease but leave behind a residue that persists and will screw up your PH readings.

Rittels sells a wool degreaser - or shop around with other suppliers. Ours degreases and rinses away free.

If you decide that you do not want to tan the hides, give us a call. In addition to tanning for taxidermy, we also have a full line of sheepskin tanning equipment. We tan sheepskin both commercially and on a custom basis.
