use cowans tannery in winnipeg if you can not find then call me at (705)476-0483, but you should do your own tanning.

Why should he do his own tanning?

I am not trying to be a smart a--, but, there are a few tanners out there that can beat anything you can do. Are you getting some sort of a kickback from a tanning chemical supplier for pushing the do-it-yourself method?

He cant even mount, let alone tan

Why should you tan your own skins,no I do not as you say get a kickback from any suppliers, but after tanning more skins then you could possibly imagine from all over the world. I know what a tannery can do,just read the posts. Once the skin is at the tannery it is out of your hands. And I am not saying that I am the best, but I know that if anybody tans their skins the way I do,they will not lose anymore skins.
you have to ask yourself one question,if you brought your (deer head) to a taxidermist and you get your deer back and your friend seea it and said "nice deer " well it's my horns and someone elses cape.
The tannery or taxidermist screwed it up. How would you like that?
Not to much I am sure.

So now you know the reason that I tan all my own skins and in 32 years I've never lost a skin " knock on wood "

"I AM ONLY TRYING TO HELP" is this not the reason these young taxidermist ask questions.

The things you use to back up your opinion are very isolated incidents. Most fur dressers will bend over backwards to keep their customers happy. Word of mouth is where they get most of their business, and believe me, word of mouth can make or break a tannery. Even if I didnt work for a tannery, and was a Taxidermist, I would still have the same opinion. Sending your skins out is just plain good business sense. Spend a little more of your time putting a few more mounts on YOUR wall!

The native tannery closed do to poor management.

oldshaver,I agree with some of your comments, but a tannery can tan skins, they are not taxidermist, not all tanneries srew up ,but many do.
If I sent all my skins out I would have no control of my skins when a tannery srews up ,you is to blaim,me or the tannery.Besides all the work to flesh a skin by hand and then salting it,and shipping, and you still think it would save me money ? wrong the way I do it it is all done on the fleshing machine ,yes all on the fleshing machine,no salting of skins,so you tell me by cutting my labour down and doing it by hand ,how am I saving on labour? You tell me and then maybe I can teach you something new.Yuor not a taxidermist so before you say any more become a taxidermist and try to do what I do you may just change your mine about a few comments.
Anybody can do what I do it is not rocket science,if anybody would like to learn call me at (705)476-0483

fish Guy why don't you call me or do you always hide behind your e-mails with no real name no e-mail ?

new tannery in Ontario

I'm going to be opening up a new tannery here in Ontario; hopefully by the end of this year. Just curious what the response might be like. I've already had quite a few calls inquiring about it. I've been a taxidermist for over 10 yrs; trained in Michigan. So, I know how much work is involved in that side of it and how important customers are! Like oldshaver said, word of mouth can make or break a business.
