Do I flesh, salt and then put the hide into a de-hairing solution or put the raw(fleshed)hide into the de-hairing solution?

I tried it once with my boss on a deerhide I had. We fleshed it, washed it, limed it for 5 days in lime and water, washed it again and then threw it into the tanning solution. It didn't turn out to bad but it had to be tumbled quite a bit to be softened....oh yah and you have to stretch and iol it too before the tumbling.
