I'm purchasing a taxidermy quality bobcat which is supposed to be tanned but the seller says that the head was left in water too long and its like hard leather. The seller bought it from a taxidermist that was going out of business. He doesn't know exactly how it was tanned. He says that the skin (head, legs and tail included) is very soft with superior color spots. Is there a way to make the head soft and pliable without treating the entire skin? Can I or should I retan the skin from beginning to end. I'm new at this. Thank you for any help.

It may be that the Tanner used a non-ionic (no charge on it) oil to oil this pelt. Consequently when it was soaked the oil leeched out.
The best method for handling it - if it is a lack of oil - is to again dampen the headskin, and reoil it. However - although it should soften it - be aware that in doing it you may end up with a slightly different color to this area. I suggest for an oil choose a good Sulphonated oil - one with a charge in it.
