shaving hides thin

just starting taxidermy, how do you know "how thin" when shaving a hide? what tool works beside a fleshing mechine.what is "sheild" they talk about.what does the hide look after tanning? mine are white and stiff. just picked up a old tumber "wooden one" put wood shaving in it.what is the easiest way to make it soft and plyable. how to know how much oil is enough? thanks

I would recommend the Breakthrough Taxidermy Manuals. Read up on the things you are asking. Also hit the orange button to the side of your screen"search" and type in some keywords. You sound like you need to do some homework first and then start working on some stuff.

Tanning

I have been diong taxidermy for around 13 years and when I started, I tanned my own hides and capes. What a mistake! I found H&H Fur Dressing located in Michigan and had them do my tanning. 11 years later I bought the business. I really feel we have the best tan out there today. If you are just getting started I recomend using a commercial tannery, you don't want to give your self a bad name right off the start.
