The hides not only need to be tanned, but tanned professionally if you intend to make clothing out of them. Putting oil on a dried deer skin is only going to make a rotten, greasy mess on your floor.

Oil tanning

Oil tanning was called "smoking".....or Chamoising, because it was the method by which Chamois leather was processed. Oil tans are ancient processes, and produce no leather suitable for clothing when applied to deer skins. Those skins need to be processed by a professional tanner if you really want to wind up with buckskin. Oiling skins is a final step in a series of complex procedures that are necessary to produce the product you desire. The oils used in the process are not the same oils offered for finishing leather.

We chrome tan leather for taxidermists and hunters, and drum dye to one of seven standard colors. We also do veg tan if desired.
