Had the chance to shoot a buffalo two weeks ago. Got home fleshed and started salting the hide, so I may mail it to a tannery. Got called out of town for a couple of days. Returned home and hide was very stiff. Got nervous about spending the money for tanning until I found some answers out. Long story short, they are really hard now. My question is. Are the hides ruined? Can they be re-hydrated and then sent to a tannery? What are some of my options? Lots of money to get them tanned, I do not want to spend the money if quality is going to be poor. Any suggestions would be appreciated, no rude comments, I know I screwed up, ha ha.
thanks

you completed salting it you are good to go
And if they are folded up for shipping, then you are OK.
Try and get them packaged for shipping as they are, salt dried.

you could probably dampen the lines where you need to fold them, just damp enough to be able to fold. Most buffalo are a little difficult to box up if they are dried flat!
JUST PULL ON THE HAIR TO SEE IF IT COMES OUT OR NOT IF NOT JUST ROLL IT UP , YOU MAY HAVE TO STEP ON IT,YOU WILL NOT HURT IT THE TANNERY WILL BE CLEANING IT WHEN TANNING.
You have done the right salting procedure, when we tan the hide it is relaxed so if it is hard that will not matter. My names josh from the oregon tannery if any other tannery gives you problems in your area about the hide give us a call at 541-752-1959.
