Small holes in cape

I took a couple capes out of the pickle last night to do some shaving on them. On one, there were multiple tiny holes in the thin briscut area of the cape. First time I've run across this. Looks almost like acid or something ate these nail sized holes in multiple areas of the skin.

I'm trying to think what I did different this time, (that could have caused this). One thing....a real stupid move on my part, was that I let my pickle container get too warm for a day or so. It was too close to my stove in the basement. It was like 30 below for the past few weeks outside, here in Montana, so I tried to warm things up somehow in the basement. I'm wondering if too much heat may have caused problems. I haven't noticed any excess hair slippage, yet. Just hoping I don't have to throw out these two nice white-tail capes....Any ideas on this one. Maybe I'm worrying over nothing. Thanks,....Steve

Possibly tick bites

I have read in the archives about ticks concentrating in the brisket area. I know the leave tiny holes on the ears so I would assume they would on the brisket also. The brisket also takes the brunt of the briars and barb wire. I have never read on here about any acid burning holes in the skin. Maybe all the smarter people will have a better answer.

Bugs

I had some whitetail hides that had the same thing, small holes in the brisket area. Turns out it was bugs . They did this when it was salted and became apparent when I pickeled. Didnt have any problems with the mounts though, I wouldnt worry about it.....
