Do I have to salt?

I was wanting to know if I have to salt my hides befor tanning and mounting?
Can I just skin him through him in the pickle and then flesh and tann?

Don't cut corners. The salt draws the body juices out of the cape, so the pickle doesn't have to work so hard. If you skip the salting process, The pickle wont be strong enough, no mater how stiff you mix it, to kill the all of the body juices. That's where the slip comes in. The PH will go sky high. Salting is a proven method that works, and a 50# bag only cost less than $5 bucks, so salt it heavy, don't sprinkle the salt.

I know a taxidermist who dosent salt just goes straight to the pickle. He has luck with doing it this way. Personally I salt mine just not rock hard. That way if it does slip I know I have done everything I could to keep it from doing so. Peace of mind if not anything. Use the salt its cheap. Check local feed stores locally I can find it for 3.50 per 50lb bag. Pretty cheap for peace of mind if you ask me.

Charley only if you have alum in your pickeling solution I done my own tanning for 32 years , I do not salt down the skins,If you do it the proper way, it is very easy to do, NO CUTTING CORNERS
