Drying of hide before pickling?

I skined a a badger salted, fleshed and salted again for about 28 hours. The hide was not dried stiff and I put in to a pickel (Van Dykes Pickling Crystals)I am than using Lutan F.

Is it imparitive that a hide be dried stiff to help set the hair, re-hydrate then pickle? If this is so, what kind of problems can I expect? Slippage?

Is it a good practice to salt dry thoroughly and re-hydrate and then pickle.

I did a search and in most entries the hide was salt dried stiff?
