Hello,
I have two deer hides I would like to tan.One I would like to tan with the hair on and the other one with the hair off. I am planning on using the salt/alum method. When I brought the hides home I laid them out on the shop floor and sprinkled salt on them and let them set for about a day and then I added more salt and let them set probably several days. I then strung them up in the shed until now.
Another website said the hair can be removed by soaking in water for several days and then if that doesn't do it, add a few ashes. So,what keeps the hair from falling out when you place the hide in the salt, water, alum mixture? What is the simplest way to degrease a hide before tanning,or does it need degreased? Is it all right to flesh the hide without soaking it? If not how should you soak it? Also will the alum from bulk food stores work?
Thanks A Lot,
Fred
