i saw a reply about alum tans and got the impression they arent any good. well, heres my problem: i use sivko fur tanners in new york state. they use a modified alum tan. as far as i know, their skins are nice. will they last forever? will any tanned hide last forever? should i be looking for a new tannery? i dont know anything about tanning, different methods and the like. opinions would be appreciated.

tanneries know what they are doing. The stuff you hear are the really experienced and/or knowledgeable people "chewing the fat" so to speak. What they are discussing usually is personal preference or tiny little details. They don't dislike alum tans, but they don't mind pointing out their downfalls either. If you are sending it to a tannery you are okay. Not to mention some people still swear by alum tans.
Tanned furs only last as long as they are taken care of.
