Help! I want to tan two whitetail deer hides with the hair on. I read a book, "The Ancient Art of Braintanning," and read it. But it deals mostly with buckskin. Interesting, but I don't think it translates. Saturday morning I harvested a small buck skin. Sunday I harvested a large doe skin and her brain. Right now those are in a cooler and tonight I'm gonna fold them meat side in and freeze them until I figure out what to do next. In case I need the brain, it's already frozen.
I want to make them into a wall hanging and maybe sew one onto some cloth for a throw blanket.
I've read a dozen different methods on how to go about this and now I'm just confused. I've never tried taxidermy or tanning before, but it seems so interesting.
Can someone give me step by step directions on how to proceed?
Thanks,
AlabamaDan

Dan , first of all you need to remove all of the meat and membrane and then you have to salt the skin for about 4 days . Then you can decide what your going to do with them . This is the first step , then you can start your tanning process . Believe me , this is a lot of work to get them soft . Go to braintan.com and read the posts there . Rick

I like that fieldnwater site, but I'm doing lots of research too. Has anyone ever used this McKenzie's tanning stuff? How's it work?
