This is not a joke, and maybe I'm the only one that didn't know this. Last night I say a program on TLC and these people in some third world country, were tanning hides with pigeon poop mixed in water. The man would place the hides in the mixture and work them with his feet for three hours. Talk about stinky feet !

It's the old version of Bate! LOL!

On Long Island NY during the Revolutionary War, a lot of Tanneries were located there. They used Dog dung in pits to Bate and soften the skins. Needless to say - when the wind was just right - hundreds of people in NYC used to gag and retch from the smell! Because of it - Tanneries have always had a bad name to live down - and are usually considered odorous!

The dung, in both cases, carries enzymes (we call the modern synthetic version a Bate) that like to eat otherwise undissolvable fats in the fibers of the skin. By removing these fats the fibers become looser and obviously you get a much softer, flexible skin.

First time I heard and read it.....

Once again Bruce is right on the money. Chicken manure was once highly prized as a perfect bate. Native Americans would use Buff dung, dog crap was also used. personally, never been courages or desperate enough to put the theory to the test. But I guess if that was all you had. Makes you wonder how someone came up with that one.LOL
