Wondering when to sew up cuts?

a. when fresh
b. after the last shave from the last pickel before the tan
c. after the tan and stake

I only used tanned capes so I sew them before mounting. Back when I tanned them I'd sew them just before I brushed on the tan, then it's all set to go. So I'd do it just before you tan..

Sewing for flats

I am assuming that you are talking about tanning for rug work? We always wait till after the hide is broken and buffed. The stitches will get ripped out during the breaking and buffing of the hide. And yes we do sand the skins with a drum sander.
