porcupine hide

So far I have fleshed it, soaked it in white gasoline, soaked it in a mixture of salt and sulfuric acid, and it is hanging in my garage on a board. Not sure what to do to it to get the smell gone, finish it up, and get it into the house. Can't stretch and pull on it because the needles will break and fall out. Appreciate any information. You can email me direct since I am not a regular on this forum at spoors@localnet.com

Where did you ever come up with this recipe?

Ron, it came out of the old A.R. Harding taxidermy book, maybe around 1903 or so.

I'd get a new porky and start over. There's a much better way than what you've tried so far. I've heard of Native Americans tanning these for a roach on traditional outfits. I've never heard of anyone tanning them with the quills in. I guess it could be done. Use the search button and look for a better way to tan.....

I have done a few in my time and the easiest way is to use dey preservative. Open cut and flesh, rub in the DP and mount. Will take about 8 hours. Fleshing is the toughest part as the skin is so delicate.
