domestic goat hide

Had a guy call me today and ask what it would cost to tan a domestic goat hide. He wondered if there was a market for that sort of thing. I really have never thought or heard about that, and after he mentioned he wanted to try it himself I suggested a tanning kit, and gave him Van Dykes web site. Have any of you ever done one? If you sent it off, how much did it cost and what would a finished one be worth, if anything. Just Wondering. Thanks in advance!

Well, at my tannery in Anchorage Alaska, I have brought them a domestic goat hide. It was actually the entire pelt (hoofs and all) that could be mounted. They are usually pretty flexible in their prices for my furs, and charged me about $25 to get the thing tanned. I'm guessing it was just the back hide you were talking about. It's not worth it. Not by a long shot. I think they sell for $10 on eBay. Just my two cents.
