Retanning?

I tanned a couple of furs with Lutan F. Now I find out it will wash out, but Rittel's EZ Tan won't. My question is, after bringing these through the whole process including the tanning oil, can I go back and wash the Lutan out, degrease to remove the tanning oil and retan with EZ Tan?

Your tan will not wash out, unless it is put into very hot water. At least over 130 degrees, maybe more. My hot water heater is set on 125, and I cant keep my hands under water at this temp, but just a couple of seconds, so why worry about it? If you are not going to wash cars in 120 degree heat with your skins, you dont need to re-tan. Tans washing out is a myth created to sell a so-called better, more expensive product. The only difference between a syn-tan, and any other tan is that a syn-tan takes a higher temp to wash out, around 160 degrees or more. Chrome being over 190 degrees. When it comes down to Taxidermy purposes, who gives a crap! Are you going to nearly boil a skin before mounting? NO. This whole farse is the biggest pile of excrement to ever hit the Taxidermy Industry!

Washing Out

If they won't wash out then why do the manufacturers tell you it will leach(wash out)? It doesn't make any sense for them to say something like that about their own product. I personally think you are wrong.

Great information

Telling it like it is !

Sometimes the more information you try to fine on a subject the more confused you can become. I fine tanning chemicals one of them.IF you don't totally understand them you can have long day getting nothing done.

I washed all the tanning agents out of about 18 pounds of skins a week ago. Cold soapy water. Every one of these except just a few was just under 3 years old. All the alum tanned stuff turned to mush. The only chrome tanned item in the bunch was ok. Any tan except chrome will leach or dry rot, some take a while, others come right out.

Tom, since you just started tanning, why not sell your first skins (ebay.com since they have no feet) and start fresh with EZ-100 on a new batch. It's easier then learning re-tanning right after tanning.

If you are weighing skins

You just told me that your tanning knowledge is very limited in the first place. As I already said, they will wash out, but not without some darn hot water. These are called T's temps by the way- the temps at wich different types of tans will wash out of a skin.
