you get ready to tan it.

Simple, think about what happens in a freezer.

Stabilizes the biodegradable material, right?

Freezes water at 32F so at what temp does saltwater freeze?

Im not sure what John is talking about , But the answer is yes. As a matter of fact up untill just a few years ago all I ever did was pickle, and to this day ive never had any problems with any deer Ive ever mounted, The only reason I tan them now is because the customers have been trained that if it isnt tanned it isnt preserved not so. When a hide is put on a form its there for good it isnt like a leather coat or skin rug that is allways moving, so it doesnt need to be flexable after it is dry. I pickeled everything as it came in and then it was frozen until I was ready to mount it, now I just wait to freeze untill after I tan.

if your pickel is complete. that means thru and thru totally every fiber of the pelt throughly pickeled. you can keep your cape in an air tight plastic bag. indefinitely. no need for freezing or cooling
