Salted cape vs dry preservative:

Trying to help out a taxidermist with a deer cape he needs that I have. Only question is he uses a dry preservative and the cape is salted and dried. Can he still rehydrate and wash this cape then safely use his method of mounting the trophy or does salting a cape ruin it's properties for such methods? I'd really like to see this man get his job done. Thankyou...

According to Sam Touchstone it does

Mr. Sam is long gone but he always said that a salted hide was worthless to him using his "Bess Maid" dp and he refused them. He claimed that the salt had leeched into the skin and would forever cause problems. PERSONALLY, it would seem that the salt is topical and leeched the moisture out. By rehydrating the hide, it would SEEM the salt would be removed.

Thankyou George!

The taxidermist who needs this cape is from Georgia. Hope some one can help him out with a frozen one.

It gives a procedure for doing this. Works okay as long as the skin was good when salted. Page 332. Look for their ad in the back classified section of hunting mags.

i use this method on coyotes all the time
