no tanning

hello, since i don't care about a good looking or soft skin, i thought up a method of my own and was wondering if it would be ok. it is to deflesh the skin, wash all the blood out of it with water, let it dry out completely, work it and stretch it by hand until it is flexible , and then smoke it to keep away bugs. all i want is for the skin to be flexible and preserved and i thought this might do it.
thanks

You thought of this all on your own?

Native Americans did that for thousands of years, sounds like you read it somewhere.

Just to flesh, wash, put in a bucket of chemicals (pickle), paint on some stuff, and wallah! a tanned skin that will last for a very long time... Just get a curatan kit from Van Dykes, Its less than 20 including shipping and will do a large deerskin or many, many small skins. Super easy to use and get great results

It's not possible.....

I've tried smoking all kinds of things and animal skins won't light. Trust me I went through 2 Bic lighters trying.

They will eventually light
