I was at the local watering hole and the converesation of taxidermy came up. I was a couple tables over so I didnt catch everything that came up but I did here some of the conversation: Did you know the "good" taxidermists can preserve the real eye's (I about spit out my beverage on that one)? Anyhow I heard one guy say taxidermists tattoo the hides before they get sent off to the tannery. Was wondering if anyone heard of this and if it would work? Thanks.

Especially when they were talking about preserving the real eyes. I'll stick with the old way of punching in my codes on my hides. It's just as permanent, and a lot less trouble.

What they would be referring to would be punching holes into the hide for identification purposes. Actually tattoo work in the hide would not last every long. Do to the fact that the tanneries will thin the hide and would remove the tattoo work. A simple hide punch works well enough. Hope this helps.
Just wondering if tattoo'ing was once used or if anyone in the tanning industry has seen it.
