What is a good tan for doing my deer capes? I have heard lots about EZ tan and using saftee acid for the pickle. What tans do you find good? Also how many of you send capes to the tannery and what is your reason? Thanks.

EZ-Tan myself, I think the best tan on the market is the one that works best for you! We do most tanning in house (except bears for wall hangers and rugs) and would not have it any other way. But please remember that most of us that tan in house have been at it for quite a long time. (We have been tanning for over 16 years) and it takes a lot of practice and work to get the best tan with any tanning system! Good Luck! Joseph R Osborn (Hunter's Dream Taxidermy)
McKensie Brush on tan. I've only done about a dozen deer (still learning), but it works great for me. I use saftee acid for the pickle. This fall, I plan on sending some out to a tannery.., it would give me time to do other things.

Jeff, there are many good tans out there, but I feel the most important part of the process is the pickle. You'll have several folks dissagree saying you don't need to pickle, but the most important ingredient involved in tanning is to make sure you get the capes shaved thin enough.I use Liqua-tan-75% of the time and Lutan-f and EZ-100 the rest of the time.I have used Kwik and ez by Rittels and Syn-tan by Van Dykes, these have all givin me great results, and there is one other paint on tan I have used, but I don't get the stretch I do with the rest, this particular tan has had folks make statements that they get the same stretch that they do with Lutan-f,I could not attain that when using that product, you just have to see what you like and go from there.

You must realy like LIQUA-TAN to post on it 3 times! Just kidding, You made a good point the pickle is very important! Even with brush on tans and I have used JRTC and all of them work better with Pre pickle. Joe
You might as well use DP, cause you are not getting a real tan. The tan cant do its job without pickeling first.
Just curious as to why nobody has mentioned KrowTann? I've only used Liqua-tan but I am going to try Krowtann soon. It sounds too good to be true.
out of all of the methods I have tried for hides that will be mounted I like KrowTann the Best. Never had any kind of trouble with it at all. Try it you will like it.
