You can do it but the Arrowhead crystals, made for the machine and sold at Van Dyke's now, are cheaper and are the same thing (an alum tan).
Do an orange button search on Krowtann in the Auto-Tanner before asking for spoon feeding.
Is sold only through Dan Rinehart Supply. They are not the same thing as Krowtann.
The arrowhead tanning crystal is a blend of mineral and synthetic agents that give a good stretchy tan.
To answer your question, the Krowtann works very well in the tanning machine, about four hours total time in the machine. Shave well after 90 minutes. After shaving, the skins can be left in for several days if that's more convenient.
I have heard from some that you can re-use the chemical, in other words you can tan more capes in the same amount because of the combination of pressure and tumbling. Never tried it (doubling up that is) myself tho.
