I have a muskrat and a couple baby racoons to tan, after the pickle do i need to shave them down? I wonder this because they already have such thin skin and thought the pickle would penatrate. Also is it ok to break them in a 6 foot drum?

not need to thin them so much but you do need to get all of the membrane off of the skin and then back into the pickle for 24. The 6' tumbler will break them as long as you have enough hard wood saw dust in it.

If you are going to build a 6 footer for a rat and some baby coon you need to think about investing in my shop! Joseph R Osborn (Hunter's Dream Taxidermy)

He asked a simple question. I am sure he is planning on doing more tanning. He has posted several questions about the tumbler subject.

I could not resist. It was right there! Someone else made me do it! Just kidding? Ok yes a 6 footer will work wonders but it takes a lot more than a drum to break other hides (bear deer elk exc.) I think you should try tanning first by first I mean try it for a year or two before you start building or buying major peices of equipment. Good luck to ya! Joe
