peppering a hide

Me and my husband have been doing taxidermy part-time for about two years. About a month ago, a client brought us his black bear to be mounted. He had put salt..and pepper on the hide. The salt I can understand, but I've never heard of putting pepper on anything but dinner. Has anyone ever heard of a reason for this?

Maybe to deter bugs or rodents? Heck I don't know.

Peppering a hide and meat will keep the flies away.

That's it, just for bugs.

I hunt in warm weather and thus see flies and other itty bitty critters that fly and crawl. They seem to hate pepper. Rats too. But pepper will not preserve a hide. It also wont hurt the hide.

I disagree.

I had read the pepper thing before, it will keep flies away. I tried it on the bear I shot last year. It didnt work! The salt and pepper thing is funny as hell though.

I got it right! What is the door prize? Actually, it was the only thing I could think of. I do know that rodents hate pepper.

Thanks for the input

I'd never heard of anyone doing this, now I know why they would.
