All elk need to be shaved and most deer. If you get a yearling deer (6 month old) it need not be shaved, just remove the membrane and you are good to go! Joe

You need to shave them for softness, suppleness, and drape.

All large mammals

All large mammals need to be shaved for softness, even the small doe and yearlings too. We have tried to get by without shaving the doe and young deer and they were more stiff than we expected, so we shave everything as far as deer.
