making a rug. with a Rittles kit

Gents...and Ladies,
I'm doing a floor rug for my son and if I use Bruce's EZ-100 kit, do I need to place the skin in a pickle before or can it go straight in the tan?

It must be pickled and all of the membrane reomoved or the tan will not work.
