I have done lots of birds

but plan to start on deer and other mammals this year. If tanning is started after caping,once tanned does the cape need to be frozen.If so is it then thawed and ready to be used? I'm going to start trying krowtannn on some of my own game before adventuring for friends. I looked through the archives but was unable to find anything related.Thanks for any advice , I have received nothing but great advice through this forum.

Nick,after tanning you can always airdry the hides also instead of freezing.I prefer to freeze mine because all I have to do is thaw them before mounting,but if airdrying you'll have to rehydrate before you can mount.

freezing does prolong shelf life. If you let the hide dry out it may not be any good a couple years down the road.
